Theoretical Analysis of Super-Resolution Readout of Disc Data by Semiconfocal Pickup Heads

Abstract
The possibility of super-resolution readout of digital disc data by means of semiconfocal optics and apodization, i.e., improvement of resolution without increasing objective NA over conventional pickup (PU) heads, is discussed based on diffraction-theory analysis and readout simulation. After reviewing the evolution to semiconfocal pickup heads, mathematical formulae to describe the pickup performances are given. It is demonstrated that super-resolution readout, which allows miniaturization of PU heads and/or enhancement of recording density, can be realized simultaneously with focusing/tracking error detection.
