Effect of Cortisone and X-radiation on RNA and Glycogen Content of Rat Hepatocytes.

Abstract
Liver glycogen and RNA-ribose were measured in 4 groups of rats, approximately 10 animals/group/day. Group I were normal controls. Group II received cortisone acetate 25 mg/day by intramuscular injection for from 1 to 5 days. Group III received X-radiation (1300 r). Group IV received X-radiation at zero time and cortisone acetate on a schedule similar to that of Group II. All animals were fasted 24 hours prior to killing which was performed in each group on days 1 through 5. Effects on carbohydrate differed. The ribose peak occurred on day 2 in Group II; on day 1 in Group HI; on day 2 in Group IV. The glycogen peak reached a high plateau on days 3 - 5 in Group II; and a peak on day 3 in Group HI and on day 2 in Group IV. On day 5 ribose values were normal in Group I and below normal in Groups III and IV. Glycogen values on days 3, 4 and 5 were well below normal in Group III.
