Abstract
Fatty material extracted from a range of 6 keratins has been found to effect the growth of fungi to varying extents. Human hair fat showed the greatest growth inhibition as estimated by a two-medium petri dish technique, whilst pigeon feather fat had only a slight effect. The significance of the free fatty acid content of the extracts has been assessed and the conclusion drawn that while the shorter chain length acids are important fungistatic agents, they are not the only inhibitory factors in the complete extract fat. Squalene showed a most marked inhibitory capacity. Keywords
