Abstract
This paper deals with the nature of the sampling errors which may occur in measurement of area by a square pattern 'dot planimeter'. The important conclusion is that the relative error of measurement is small if the count of points is of the order of 100 per parcel. The authors recommend the use of different sizes of point pattern for the measurement of different sizes of parcel, rather than the use of a single overlay for the measurement of every parcel on a given map. The theoretical work is supported by some results of measurements made on the McKay Pattern Map using the MK Area Calculator. Keywords
