Abstract
A trial to evaluate a combination of 1:8 -dihydroxyanthraquinone [DHA] with poloxalkol in the treatment of geriatric constipation is described. 42 geriatric patients, requiring regular laxative administration, were treated for 28 days with standarised senna, bisacodyl or Mist. Alba. The same group of patients was treated for a further 28 days with a DHA/pol-oxalkol combination and the number of bowel openings and suppositories and enemata required in both periods were compared. In the period of treatment with the varied laxative 493 bowel openings occurred compared with 626 (an increase of 27%) in the DHA /poloxalkol stage. The number of suppositories and enemata were greatly reduced in the DHA/poloxalkol phase. Keywords
