Abstract
A first-principle calculation of the one-phonon, coherent, polycrystalline, inelastic scattering cross section for neutrons has been carried out for a monatomic fcc crystal; the quasiharmonic force constants were obtained from a Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential of interaction between the particles. The calculations were made for three values of the crystal density. The prescription of Egelstaff for calculating this cross section is found to be inadequate, and the formula of Marshall and Stuart is shown to be identical with that of Egelstaff. Keywords
