Abstract
The inelastic scattering of cold neutrons by liquid and solid HF has been used to study the low‐frequency modes of motion. On melting a pronounced reduction in amplitude and increase in width is observed in the near‐inelastic spectra. Analysis of the angular dependence of this effect suggests that it is due to rotational rather than translational modes of motion. In this event the rotational diffusion constant is ≈ 1 × 1012 sec−1. Additional evidence is given to support the idea of hydrogen‐bonded polymers in the liquid state of HF.Keywords
