Abstract
A healthy 40-year-old housewife inadvertently drank from a cup containing bleach. When she telephoned two separate medical units she was advised to drink plenty of water. She followed this advice literally until she developed water intoxication and subsequently died. Symptoms, signs and diagnosis of water intoxication are described. This case illustrates the care needed when medical advice is given by telephone. Keywords
