Abstract
A field ion mass spectrometer is used to determine the dependence of the association equilibrium 2 HCOOH⇄ (HCOOH)2 on the electrical field. An electric impulse (10-8 sec rise time) desorbs from a field emitter multilayers which have been built up under the influence of fields of 106 to 107 volt/cm. The expected field dependence of the equilibrium was only partially attained and this can be explained by the dynamic behaviour of the reacting system. However, an effect of the electrical field on equilibrium systems has definitely been demonstrated and is regarded to be important for the mechanism of field ionization.
