Abstract
An expression for calculating the state energies of a Wannier exciton, interacting with a crystalline polarization field, is derived. The derived expression is applicable for arbitrary values of the electron-hole binding. This expression is applied to calculate the binding energy of a Wannier exciton in the ionic polarization field for a number of polar semiconductors. The results obtained are discussed in relation to experimental results and some comments on the previous calculations of other authors and the present authors are drawn. Keywords
