ABSORPTION SPECTRA OF ALPHA AND BETA CAROTENES AND LYCOPENE

Abstract
Curves of the specific absorption coefficients for [alpha] and [beta] carotene and lycopene are presented for the wave length range from 3900 to 5300 A. The carotenes from 2 localities resolved into their components on 2 different adsorbents, magnesia and Ca(OH)*, yield identical products. A discussion is presented of the desirability, in all future work, of stating the magnitude of error and certain fundamental details of the optical system employed, particularly with regard to the purity of the spectral region isolated at the various wave lengths where measurements are made.
