Abstract
37 reports of organized research on the personality characteristics of alcoholics are summarized and analyzed. No satisfactory evidence was discovered to justify a conclusion that persons of one personality type are more likely to develop alcoholism than those of another type. Reasons are suggested for the failure to discover an alcoholic personality type: possible inadequacy of methods of study or of number of studies, possible lack of homogeneity in the group or actual absence of specific relation between alcoholism and generic personality traits. Keywords
