Personality Traits and the Alcoholic; A Critique of Existing Studies

Abstract
37 reports of organized research on the personality characteristics of alcoholics are summarized and analyzed. No satisfactory evidence was discovered to justify a conclusion that persons of one personality type are more likely to develop alcoholism than those of another type. Reasons are suggested for the failure to discover an alcoholic personality type: possible inadequacy of methods of study or of number of studies, possible lack of homogeneity in the group or actual absence of specific relation between alcoholism and generic personality traits.
