The development of basic auditory processes in infants.

Abstract
Studies of basic auditory processes (absolute and differential thresholds, masking) in human infants are reviewed. It is argued that autonomic and physiological responses to sounds may measure attentional thresholds rather than thresholds of hearing. A behavioral technique for threshold assessment involving reinforcement of a head turn to a sound source is described and used to determine thresholds for sounds in quiet and in background noise.
