Abstract
Beroe abyssicola Mortensen is a ctenophore occurring in the strait of Georgia, found only at depths of 150 fathoms or more, characterised by the possession of a deep red lining to the stomodoeum, which is due to a symbiotic flagellate present in very large numbers in the cells immediately beneath the epithelial layer. The organism is minute, never exceeding 2 μ in diameter.Though highly coloured, it lives in an environment to which practically no sunlight penetrates, thus resembling the green organism inhabiting the cells of the intestinal lining of the Chaetopteridae previously described by the author.
