Screening of Preschool Children for Amblyopia

Abstract
A simplified, new method of screening the vision of 3- and 4-year-old children by parent-administered tests done at home has been devised. The test is based on the ability of the child to correctly identify the position in which the image of a human hand (a modified Sjogren hand test) is rotated. The results of trials by many pediatricians throughout the United States who gave the hand screening card to parents of their patients for testing at home (and then later confirmation by ophthalmologists) indicate that for many children this is a satisfactory method of early detection of unilateral impaired vision characteristic of amblyopia ex anopsia.
