Abstract
This paper offers a critique and application of Adam Przeworski's ‘dilemma of electoral socialism’by examining the Scandinavian case with a major focus on the Swedish Social Democrats. The critique questions several assumptions underpinning Przeworski's argument and the statistical analysis employed to support the argument. Using data from election surveys, the paper provides an additional test of Przeworski's hypotheses and discloses a number of problems. A major difficulty is that certain axiomatic tendencies in Przeworski's line of reasoning obstruct fully developing the potential of making party strategies and class formation variables in explaining the electoral performance of socialist parties.
