Abstract
In the relationship between a part and its whole (e.g., heart weight and total body wt.) consider the regression equation [image] where H represents the part (heart) and B the whole (body). If b is less than the average proportion of the part to the whole, then a must be significantly greater than zero and vice versa. a will be significant if the residual variance is significantly reduced by the inclusion of a in the regression equation; such a test is furnished by the partition of the variation in the measurement of the part after adjustment for the measurement of the whole. Heart and body wts. of 144 cats are used for illustration. Keywords
