Abstract
In these words Janet Richardson of the City and Hackney Community Health Council (CHC) sums up the impetus for the introduction of the Community Module and alludes to the way the innovation was introduced (Wykurz 1992). The CHC’s ambitions coincided with the emerging alliance between the local medical colleges of the St Bartholomew’s and Royal London School of Medicine. Although students entered medical school motivated to meet people, no programmed involvement in the community existed to tap and channel this enthusiasm. Restructuring of the curriculum created the opportunity to introduce a community-based clement for first-year students. Consulting community organizations and public health departments at the outset ensured that the module reflected local health issues. This approach reflects the principles adopted by the World Health Organization for community-based educational programmes that have been valuable reference points during the module’s development (WHO 1987).
