MITRAL VALVOTOMY IN RELATION TO PREGNANCY

Abstract
The results of mitral valvotomy in 41 pregnant patients are reported. There was one maternal death. Comparison of the results with those in a similar group of women who had mitral valvotomy when not pregnant showed no significant difference between the 2 groups. The indications for mitral valvotomy during pregnancy are the same as for those who are not pregnant. A further 58 patients who became pregnant after mitral valvotomy have been compared with a similar group of women who did not become pregnant subsequent to operation. This comparison suggests that pregnancy subsequent to mitral valvotomy increases the chances of deterioration in cardiac status.
