The Practical Exploitation of Instrumental Match Prediction

Abstract
Instrumental match prediction based on the spectrophotometer, the tristimulus colorimeter, and the digital computer has been applied to a wide range of fabrics, using Procion dyes applied by a wide variety of dyeing methods, and to mass‐pigmented viscose rayon. The technique described produces satisfactory matches in a very much shorter time than by traditional colour‐matching methods. The accuracy is such that commercially acceptable matches can he obtained with no more than one shading addition. The implications of these findings for the immediate future are discussed.
