Abstract
A location probability estimation method of service availability for portable units is proposed taking into consideration the given noise properties. A necessary carrier level or bit error rate at which quality is barely bearable is first defined. Location probabilities are estimated under the conditions of both Rayleigh fading and log-normal shadowing. Average carrier level required is generally larger in portables. Diversity reception is shown to be effective in reducing the required level. A forced fluctuation is suggested to be effective.
