Abstract
Protomyces pachydermus and P. inouyei contains β-, γ-carotene and lycopene, with β-carotene predominating. Taphrina deformans and T. communis contains no carotenoid pigments although the colour of methanol extracts of all four species is yellow. A quick way of differentiating between these two genera is by showing the presence of carotenoid pigments in Protomyces and absence of these in Taphrina. It is suggested that a knowledge of individual carotenoid pigments in fungi might be useful as a taxonomic tool among fairly closely related species. Keywords
