Abstract
A study of the carbohydrate fermentation of 52 strains of S. pullorum and 31 of S. gallinarum shows that the members of each group agree closely in acid production from these substances. S. pullorum usually produces gas from fermentable carbohydrates; S. gallinarum, never. Titration of antigens from these strains against antisera from 8 representative strains of S. pullorum and 5 of S. gallinarum reveals no definite antigenic differences between the 2 groups of avian pathogens, nor any subgroups with the exception of a slight differentiation within S. gallinarum. Both pullorum and gallinarum are regarded as belonging to the genus Salmonella. A method is given for routine identification of avian pathogens. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
