Abstract
Hypocalcemia was induced in six sheep by hemodialysis with an artificial kidney. As plasma calcium was decreased, parotid saliva calcium decreased. The direct relation of plasma calcium (Y in mg. per 100 ml. plasma) to parotid saliva calcium (X in mg. per 100 ml. saliva) could be expressed by the regression equation Y=3.8+4.3X. Since parotid secretion was devoid of calcium below an average plasma level of 3.8 mg. per 100 ml., the data suggest that a threshold level of plasma calcium greater than 3.8 mg. per 100 ml. is necessary before calcium will appear in parotid saliva.
