SOME CHEMICAL EFFECTS FROM CONSTANT INTRAVENOUS EPINEPHRINE INJECTION IN DOGS

Abstract
Epinephrine intraven. administered to 4 dogs continuously for 4-13 days produced a transient hyperglycemia and glycosuria (both gone in 24 hrs.) and an increase in urinary output but no change in 24-hr. urinary N excretion. Normal urinary and blood sugar persisted during continued injection, even when the amt. of epinephrine was doubled. Cessation of epinephrine produced an abrupt hypoglycemia (perhaps due to increased insulin secretion) with a slow return of blood sugar to normal values. Resumption of epinephrine produced a 2nd but less marked hyperglycemia and glycosuria.
