Abstract
INCREASED longevity has been paralleled by a rise in the number of patients afflicted with aneurysms of the abdominal aorta. The survival outlook for these patients is bleak unless aneurysmectomy is performed.1 A satisfactory technical surgical result is too frequently nullified by fatal acute renal failure.2 3 4 Crossclamping of the abdominal aorta below the renal arteries and manipulation of the aorta appear causally related to the high incidence of renal failure associated with aneurysmectomy.5 , 6 Suggested possible mechanisms vary from atheromatous embolization to reflex renovascular spasm.3 , 7 In the laboratory animal, trauma applied to areas distant from the kidneys can cause reflex renovascular . . .Keywords
