Abstract
An analysis of the mechanics of three‐body ion recombination is given. The relative efficiencies of various gases in promoting ion recombination are calculated and found to be in satisfactory agreement with experiment. The calculations lead to qualitative conclusions about how mass, relative velocity, and the nature of the deactivation criterion affect the magnitude of the recombination rate. Keywords
