Abstract
The synthesis of 1-methylthiovinyltriphenyl- and 1-phenylthiovinyltriphenyl-phosphonium salts (1; R = SMe and R = SPh) by introduction of a methylene group α- to the phosphonium centre in Ph3P+CH2SR is described. The scope and limitations of the method are indicated. The salts (1; R = SMe and R = SPh) are used in the formation of highly functionalised cyclopentanes via an intramolecular Witting reaction. Keywords
