Abstract
An approximate theoretical study of bonded rubber blocks under moderate compressions has been carried out. The study is an extension of an earlier one by Gent and Meinecke wherein thin rubber blocks were considered under compression, bending, and shear with small amounts of strain. Here larger amounts of strain are considered and it is shown that considerable difference exists between the present analysis and that of Gent and Meinecke for strains in excess of 5 per cent. An attempt has also been made to define ‘thin’ rubber blocks by using some of the experimental results available. Within the limit of the definition of a ‘thin’ block it is shown that the amount of strain (tensile) necessary to produce an internal rupture can no longer be neglected as in the work of Gent and Meinecke but must be included in the initial analysis.
