Abstract
An ‘immediate’ or type I hypersensitivity response was elicited in the skin of calves from 3 to 20 weeks after their experimental infection with Fasciola hepatica by the intradermal injection of small amounts of a complex lipid-free antigen of this parasite. In the later stages of the experiment, from 16 to 20 weeks after infection, the weal initiated by this type I reaction was prolonged by the subsequent development of an ‘Arthus’ or type III hypersensitivity reaction. The size of the weal elicited by the hypersensitivity responses increased with the duration of infection but was unrelated to the size of a calf’s acquired fluke burden or its state of reinfection with this parasite. Keywords
