Abstract
In three elderly patients suffering from long-standing arteriosclerotic coronary heart disease concomitantly with a recent coxsackie B virus infection, a transmural heart infarction occurred. In addition, viral myocarditis, pericarditis and desquamative interstitial pneumonia were detected. Histological examination of the coronary arteries disclosed a prominent mononuclear inflammatory exudate in the media; this led to the morphological diagnosis of coronary arteritis with or without thrombosis. So far, these findings would support the hypothesis of Spodick[1] that in viral infection coronary arteritis may be one of the possible pathways to precipitation of acute heart infarction in patients with arteriosclerotic coronary heart disease. Keywords
