Inhibitory Effect of Salmon and other Calcitonins on Calcium Release from Mouse Bone In Vitro

Abstract
Salmon calcitonin in a concentration of 0.8 ng/ml inhibited for 20 h cell-mediated release of 45Ca from cultured mouse calvaria. Porcine calcitonin in a concentration of 2500 ng/ml was much less effective. The response (percent inhibition) to salmon calcitonin was proportional to the logarithm of the dose over the range 0.012–0.20 ng/ml, and may provide a very sensitive in vitro bioassay for salmon calcitonin.
