Abstract
The factors leading to substituent effects on the electron distribution in aromatic molecules are discussed, particular attention being paid to the π‐electron system. IR spectroscopy has proved an extremely useful probe in this field of study. Substituent d‐orbital participation and the relevance of the π‐inductive effects are also considered. Keywords
