Acousto-optic frequency shifting in ordinary single-mode fibre

Abstract
A new all-fibre frequency shifter is reported. Bend-induced birefringence is introduced in ordinary single-mode fibre. Light launched into one of the principal axes thus created is coupled with a frequency shift to the orthogonal axis by interaction with a travelling acoustic wave. Unwanted sideband suppression of 20 dB has been demonstrated.
