Abstract
The theories advanced by Makinson and Mercer to explain the D. F. E. of wool are critically examined; as a result of the objections raised against these theories, the author advances a new hypothesis to explain the D .F.E. based on the anisotropic elastic properties of moist keratin. The hypothesis is then quantitatively developed and the reulting equation is found to fit the experimental results of several workers.
