Abstract
The stability criteria implied by a simplified semiclassical laser model are considered in detail. It is found that two types of criteria must be distinguished. The first concerns the smallest pump rate for which infinitesimal perturbations of the steady-state solution will increase with time, and the second concerns the smallest pump rate for which large amplitude modulations will not damp away. Keywords
