Abstract
The growth of the salivary gland, i.e., the immense increase in cell and nuclear size so characteristic for this structure during larval development depends upon the action of the larval ring gland. Larval salivary glands of D. virilis, when transplanted into the body cavity of adult c? flies remain larval and cease to grow; growth can be restored by the simultaneous transplantation of larval ring glands. The ring glands do not only restore the growth of the salivary gland but also finally cause its metamorphosis. The ring gland factor responsible for the growth and metamorphosis of the salivary gland is presumably hormonal in nature. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
