Arginine, Ornithine and Proline Metabolism of Chicks: Influence of Diet and Heredity

Abstract
Studies were conducted to ascertain the presence in chick liver and kidney of the enzymes responsible for the conversion of arginine to glutamic acid and proline, and to evaluate their activities under conditions in which the initial enzyme of the enzymatic sequence, arginase, was altered by genetic selection or the feeding of amino acid excesses. The chick was found to possess all of the enzymes which are necessary for the formation of proline and glutamic acid from arginine. Another enzyme, proline oxidase, was found to be present in chick kidney but not chick liver. All of the enzymes were subject to variation in activity under some of the experimental conditions employed. In general, however, the alteration of enzyme activity did not appear to be coordinated with changes of kidney arginase activity.Keywords
