Enhancement of Mouse Thymus Cells Response to Periodate Treatment by a Soluble Factor

Abstract
Mouse lymph node and spleen lymphocytes are stimulated by sodium periodate (NaIO4) treatment, whereas mouse thymus cells show a minimal response. Hydrocortisone-resistant thymus cells are much more responsive to phytohemagglutinin than NaIO4 treatment. Thymus cells are rendered highly responsive to NaIO4 treatment upon addition of cell-free supernatants of mouse spleen cell and macrophage cultures. Treatment of mouse spleen cells and macrophages with NaIO4 stimulates the production of the enhancing factor for thymus cell response.
