Abstract
It is assumed that the -particle is described by a spinor wave function, and that the pion may be treated as a nucleon-antinucleon pair. The rates of the following reactions are then compared under the assumption that both reactions are governed by the same form and strength of -interaction. The ratio of the two lifetimes is independent of all numerical details of the pion structure. Putting in the observed lifetime of the pion, one finds for the lifetime of the sec for Mev; and 2× sec for Mev. The two values have been interpreted in terms of a mass doublet.
