Quantitative Nutritional Studies With Water-Soluble, Chemically Defined Diets. X. Formulation of a Nutritionally Complete Liquid Diet

Abstract
The formulation of a nutritionally adequate, chemically defined, crystal-clear liquid diet composed of 18 crystalline l-amino acids (except for glycine), the water-soluble vitamins, the pertinent salts, glucose, the fat-soluble vitamins, and ethyl linoleate as the source of essential fatty acid, has been achieved. This liquid diet is prepared as a transparent, clear, stable emulsion of the latter two, fat-soluble, ingredients in a 50 percent solution of the other ingredients in water, with the aid of a small amount of polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monoöleate (Tween 80). The lipide phase reveals no tendency to separate or become rancid, and the clear diet may be stored at room temperature or at −20° C. for prolonged periods without apparent deterioration. Weanling rats fed these diets ad libitum for over 3 months exhibited no signs of essential fatty-acid deficiency and, indeed, grew at the same rate as did controls that were provided the fat-soluble vitamins in Mazola (corn) oil as a supplement.
