Precise Position of the nml Locus on the Genetic Map of Salmonella

Abstract
The presence of .epsilon.-N-methyllysine(NML) in Salmonella flagellin is under the genetic control of a gene termed nml, which is probably the structural gene for an enzyme methylating the .epsilon.-amino groups of certain lysine residues in flagellin. The nml gene is closely linked to H1 (the structural gene for phase-1 flagellin) and some fla genes (a group of genes required for the production of flagellin). Using phage P22 for tranductional crosses between S. abortus-equi mutants, the precise order of the nml gene is obtained: -flaAl-H1-nml-flaL-.
