Estriol Concentrations in Urine and Serum in Patients with Various Intestinal Diseases

Abstract
Pregnant women with ulcerative colitis show frequently low estriol [E3] values in serum and urine. Patients [18] with ulcerative colitis, 4 patients with Crohn''s disease and 3 patients with a by-pass operation were examined. Low E3 concentrations were seen only in patients with ulcerative colitis, especially in patients where an operation has been performed. In 1 patient with severe diarrhea the E3 concentration in serum was low until the intestinal function normalized and the E3 concentration went up exactly when the diarrhea stopped. No unequivocal connection between low E3 concentrations and diarrhea could be demonstrated.
