Abstract
This paper is an account of measurements of proton-proton scattering made with a negative-pressure bubble chamber. The experimental setup, beam, and operation cycle are described. A brief description of the bubble chamber is given and an analysis is made of errors associated with this technique. Total cross sections for carbon and hydrogen are measured and our data are fitted to an angular distribution which is the sum of the first five even Legendre polynomials. The results are: the total cross section for carbon is 317±17 millibarns; the total integrated cross section for hydrogen from 10° to 90° in the center-of-mass system is 25.8±2.3 millibarns. For our angular distribution, 507 events were used to determine a least squares fit to five parameters. The best fit is: mb/sterad.
