Abstract
Tunneling images of carburized nickel (100), (110), and (111) surfaces were obtained with a scanning tunneling microscope(STM). Atomic images of graphite deposited on a single nickelsurface were observed. The atomic distance and alignment of carbon in the above images were, however, different from those of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite. These modifications were discussed from a viewpoint of the effect of the nickelsurface. Keywords
