The Screening of Antiulcer Drugs by a Quantal Procedure

Abstract
A linear relationship was found between the log of the dose of antiulcer drugs and the percentage of phylorus-ligated "Shay" rats protected from gastric ulceration. The avg. effective doses are: for atropine 11 mg./kg. subcut., 70 mg./kg. orally; for Artane, 70 mg./kg. subcut; and for Banthine, 5.3 mg./kg. subcut, 140 mg./kg. orally. Short acting ganglionic blocking agents (hexamethonium, pentamethonium and tetraethylammonium) are active only following short duration of pyloric ligation (17 hrs.) and by using a fractionated injn. No antihistaminic agent (Pyribenzamine, Benadryl, Thephorin and Tagathen) is effective.
