Abstract
Oxygen consumption and swimming rates are given for 200 open water swims of varying distance. Average oxygen consumption was 1.3–1.9 l/min. at average swim rates from 0.7–0.9 mph. A wide variation in oxygen consumption was observed under these field conditions. The range was not narrowed when converted to liters of oxygen per square meter of body surface and may result primarily from differences in individual swimming ability. Frequent subjective symptoms of CO2 accumulation in the breathing equipment were reported. Submitted on April 9, 1956Keywords
