Transient Performance Testing of a Parabolic Trough Concentrating Solar-Energy Collector

Abstract
Based on the response function, a method has been developed which enables a solar-energy collector's performance to be characterized even under intermittently sunny conditions. The accuracy of this transient-testing method, as well as the equipment required for its effective application, are described. The performance of a low-concentration-ratio tracking parabolic-trough solar-energy collector exposed to ambient environmental conditions has been deduced. Initially, a commercially manufactured collector was tested over a period of one month. A second series of measurements was carried out after improvements had been made to the collector. The effect of the variation of the ratio of the diffuse to the total insolation on the performance of the collector has been determined.
