Abstract
An increase in total CO2 concentration of the incubation medium, at constant pH, results in a pronounced increase in the synthesis of fatty acids of triglycerides and of phospholipids from acetate-1-C14 by rat liver slices, but no change in the acetate converted to CO2. By alternately increasing the pH by lowering the CO2 tension or by raising the HCO3 - concentration, it was concluded that pH changes within physiological limits affect the conversion of acetate to CO2 but do not affect the synthesis of fatty acids. On the other hand, the synthesis of fatty acids by liver in vitro is markedly affected by changes, within physiological limits, of the HCO3 - concentration. Keywords
