The structure of molten CsCl

Abstract
The partial pair distribution functions for molten CsCl have been measured using the technique of thermal neutron scattering from isotopically enriched samples. The algorithim proposed by McGreevy and Mitchell (1982) for analysing data from such experiments is tested, and some minor modifications are proposed. The data are also analysed using a method similar to that proposed by Derrien and Dupuy (1975) to show that the small-scale structure observed by them in molten CsCl is an artefact of this method of analysis. The radial distribution functions are compared with the simulation carried out by Dixon and Gillan (1980). Significant differences are observed, and possible modifications of the potential are suggested. Comparison is also made with molten NaCl and RbC1; trends in the results with increasing cation size are discussed.
